SALISPILS MEMORIAL
In 1941, Nazi occupation authorities, using forced labour, built a concentration camp in a pine forest near Salispils, 40km south of Riga, Latvia. Thousands suffered and died there, including thousands of children.
A memorial was established there in 1967.
Over the entrance to the site is an inscription, in Latvian, with the words of Eizens Veveris: "Beyond these gates the earth moans."
